Goodwood 2012: Lancia Stratos

This photograph is here for two reasons. Firstly, it's the Lancia Stratos, one of the most iconic rally cars of its age, if not of all time, being a three-time winner of the World Rally Championship (1974/75/76), and an individual rally winner many more times besides (up to 1981, even!).

The second reason is to highlight something about one of the new techniques I was using at Goodwood this year; using a longer exposure than necessary to capture wheelspin. Being on the apex of a chicane was great for catching the vehicles at a slow speed, but rather than being able to pan and keep them in focus while they drove in a straight line, the pivoting motion around the corner means that the centre is static and in focus, while the opposite ends are travelling in opposite directions and so blur out of focus like the wheels due to the motion. Still, it's an interesting effect!
