Geneva 2011: Quattro on Ice

Description

Yes, it is real ice! Like many others there, I had to go and touch it to make sure it wasn't just a plastic mock up, but Audi weren't the only ones playing with ice this year. I think it was the Toyota stand that had whole 'hills' of ice on their stand, some taller than the people on the stand! Even so, it was still really warm!

I think that this display was supposed to promote the power of the quattro four wheel drive system in difficult conditions, like on icy roads. But if you wake up one morning, and your car is encased in ice, I don't think it would be much use. Maybe a flamethrower would be more use? :D

How to get people to come to your stand: Place something interesting looking in a position where the public can reach it to touch it, stand back and start counting how many people poke it.

Neat effect though. I suspect the crack is a natural occurrence, often happens in ice cubes and larger chunks of water I've found...I'm *guessing* that it's due to stresses caused by pressure changes as it freezes, given that the ice would start to freeze from the outside, trapping water inside it, which then over time also freezes. Ice of course takes up more space than water...so that's going to create pressure as it freezes...that will build up until something gives. ...At least that's my theory.

Nice photo as well, initially I thought he lettering had been created by someone getting over-enthusiastic with some laser etching equipment or something until I figured it out. Thumbnail had me thinking it was laser etched glass.

Wonder how long that lasted for before melting.
